Sep 9, Grow Herbs to Sell

You can grow herbs to sell at the same time as you're growing your own herb garden.

There are always far too many seeds in a packet, but if you sow them all, then you can use the surplus to begin your own herb nursery.

Start with the more popular herbs, that way you'll know you have a market and can test the demand and your organizational skills.

It's also a good idea to divide your own herb plants for stock.

Often, plants become overcrowded and benefit from thinning out.

Chives are a good example of this. Just dig up your clump and separate into four or five bulbs per pot. Replant some in your own garden, tend the pot plants and you'll have an addition to your stock for your herb nursery.

Use plants that have self seeded to increase your stock as well.

It's quite possible to begin to grow herbs to sell at little to no cost.

There are more details of how to grow, market and price at the link below.

This will take you to the herb guide's page 'Growing Herbs for Profit'

Sep 1, Control Slugs and Snails

If you're experiencing a growth in the slug and snail population in your garden, then try some of these natural methods before you reach for the chemicals.

Encourage frogs, toads, birds, snakes and hedgehogs into your garden. They all eat slugs and snails.

Use salt, soot, hair, sand, broken eggshells or wood shavings round the bottom of tender plants. Renew these if it rains.

Sink bowls of beer in the garden. Slugs and snails enjoy this, take a drink, fall in and drown.

An empty grapefruit half will get the slugs congregating underneath - then just drop them in warm soapy water to kill them.

They love oat bran - this expands inside and they die.

All sounds a bit barbaric, but if you're tired of slugs and snails getting your most tender plants and eating more of your vegetables than you do, then you'll probably give it a go.

You can plant strong smelling plants such as geranium, mint, chive, fennel or garlic round the edge of your garden - slugs will stay away from those.
