Herbie!

Bought 12 pots of herbs 2 weeks ago, for potting on, & all looked very young, but healthy.

Compost in pots was damp.

Have kept indoors & in original pots for time being. Some of the herbs started to look a little limp, so checked under bottom of pots through drainage holes & in some compost seemed dry, plus some roots had come through in some of them.

Stood pots in a little water for a short time to replenish, now they look worse!

Herbs are mint, oregano, chives, parsley, basil & thyme.

Tried Spray n' Grow on all a couple of days ago.

Unfortunately not been sunny here, v.v. windy, plus still a danger of frost here (UK), so can't put outside yet.

Basil, oregano thyme, mint now appear to have 'died'

Chives are yellowing & parsley looks a little paler.

Have been on windowsill in lounge & in sun when there's been any.

Anything I can do to 'resurrect' them & keep the others healthy?

I'm so sad - this is about my 4th attempt to grow herbs indoors for cooking.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give..

New Herbs
by: Liz

Oh dear - that sounds very bad.

A lot of questions here - where did you buy them?

If it was a nursery or reputable grower, I suggest you go back with the plants and ask for their advice or your money back.

There are too many variables here to be able to give you overall advice without seeing the herbs.

The plants may have been displayed outside in which case, they could have suffered from the cold - if they go in and out on a daily basis until they're sold, then that can be a problem.

If this is the case, then you need to be patient - they could pick up in time.

Sometimes, people mistake signs of thirst and then over water - that could be the problem here - if you give plants too much water, they can't 'breathe' as the soil is waterlogged.

I live in the UK and don't know 'spray and grow' do you have confidence in it? If so, then be patient - all may come well in the end.

You do need to remove the yellowing leaves from the plants - they are dead/dying.

Quite a lot of herbs will recover if you chop them back - cut back by about a half and you might be surprised in the new growth.

Make sure that the light they have is 'good' - ie not just coming from one side. They will grow towards the light and get 'leggy'.

If you want to upload photos, I can comment on each one, but the best advice I can give is to go back to where you bought them from.

If it was a supermarket, then these herbs aren't designed to grow on - just to cut for a week or two, then die.

Do upload some photos or go back to the place you bought them from.

Bye for now

Regards

Liz
