Migraine Headaches

by Richard Dixson
(Saint Joe, Arkansas)

My granddaughter suffers from these terrible migraine headaches and as a shadetree herbalist I've tried about everything to help her. Feverfew was suggested by Matthew Woods and James Green. Alice Swanson suggested evening primrose and I've tried them all. Has anyone got any other suggestions? I don't want to turn to traditional medicine, so lets keep it herbal.

herbal/OTC

As a long time sufferer of these debilitating gifts from the Gods, I can tell you what has worked and not worked for ME. That's the clincher folks, it is different for each individual. It's as individual as your dental records.

There are however a few things things that my doctor nor herbalist told me over the years.

MAGNESIUM as in a "trate".

Not only is it nessassary and benificial to help us absorb vitamin D, but low levels of magnesium are also THE main culperate of Migraine headaches. Did you know this?

Simple really...just google migraines and "liver". It appears that if your liver counts are off, bingo-bango, you've got yourself a doozy of a headache.

Now you can up your intake through diet, or take a supplement. I know there are die-hards out there who will shudder and gasp at such a suggestion, but unless you want to drop $45.00 a pound on roasted pumpkin seeds, I suggest $6.99 with free shipping for a 2 month supply.

So it's helped me. and I've taken Imitrex, Maltex, Feverfew, changed my diet, cut out chocolate, red wine and caffine and STILL I suffered enough to contemplate crawling into teh bathtub and slitting some fleshy part of my body.

I myself chose to up my intake of magnesium as a preventative and I take Zomig 5mg for when one does hit.

No prescriptions? Then you've never had a migraine. Ever. You have no idea. I once sat through 7 root canals in ONE SITTING after a car accident and I would do that all over again before I would want a migraine.

Migraine Treatment
by: Liz

Feverfew is the traditional herbal remedy for migraine.

I think it has a cumulative effect though.

It's not a pain relief like a tablet, but something you take on a regular basis to prevent or lessen the severity of migraine.

It is generally accepted (and has gone through clinical trials) to reduce the duration, lessen the pain, vomiting and sensitivity to light.

You can take it in a daily sandwich with cream cheese and butter - lessens the bitter taste - in a salad with mixed leaves or as a tea.

Brew about an ounce, 30g of fresh leaves with 1/2 pint boiled water - strain and sweeten with honey - add a squeeze of lemon if you like - drink one cup a day.

Feverfew is a preventative rather than a cure for the migraine once it's taken a hold - take it daily in some form and you should see a reduction in migraine frequency or duration.

Liz
