Selling Herbs for Profit

by Darrin
(Calumet, OK)

I appreciate the information on your website. If a person were interested in growing herbs, where would one market them, how are they sold (pound, plant etc.). I live in Central Oklahoma, approximately 50 miles west of Oklahoma City.

Thanks,

Another Market for Selling Herbs
by: Anonymous

Can't believe I have never considered this, but you could also try eBay to sell your growing herbs.

You'll need to give a bit of thought to packaging and posting, but have a search around and see what other people are charging.

You could even protect your plants with shredded newspaper during transit and claim you're saving the planet by recycling!

It's worth a try and will only cost a small amount of money to give it a go.

Selling Herbs for Profit

Hi Darrin

Liz here :-)

I've removed your email address for security but you will be notified automatically when this page is updated.

Right - it's a good question and people have to find their own markets to all intents and purposes.

It depends on many things - how many herbs you have grown for sale, the time you have and where you are situated.

You could start just with a yard sale - put a board outside your house, put an ad in the local shops and papers and say for instance 'Saturday 4th April, Herb Plant Sale 10 am to 2 pm' and just repeat that until you run out of stock.

In the UK, we have car boot sales - don't know if you have the equivalent in the US, but there's often a good market there. They tend to be held on weekend mornings and are a good source of local shoppers.

You could approach local shops and garden centres.

Also local restaurants may be interested in a supply of fresh herbs.

Pricing is something else to consider - check out the local nurseries and shops to see what they're charging and price yours accordingly.

If you're selling cut herbs, then you will need to price by the pound - growing herbs will be per plant.

On the page below, I go into a bit more detail about things to consider.

Best of luck with your venture - it's something you can do in your spare time until you see if it's for you.

Regards

Liz
