Ugly Mint

I have mint growing in my flower garden in front of my house.

It is a mostly shady area except for in the morning.

I've noticed the last two years that it starts out really beautiful in the spring, but by mid summer the leaves are small and there is a lot of space between them and instead of being bright green and pretty, they are dull and dry looking.

I've cut them way back, and then the leaves start out fresh but before long they are dull again.

Do you have any suggestions? I'm including a few pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Hi Lucy

My mint looks exactly the same in my garden - it's the way it grows I'm afraid unless you keep clipping it back.

You've noticed that when you trim it, it comes back green and fresh so if you want to keep it that way, then keep clipping it - use it to make jellys or sauce - mint pesto as a sauce for ice cream perhaps?

Mint is rampant and will grow like mad in an open flower bed, you need to keep it in check or it will take over.

Regards

Liz
